Vegans taking more than a slice of the lucrative pizza market

As the very first National Pizza Week gets into full swing across Britain, The Pizza, Pasta & Italian Food Association and member of the association, Papa John’s, today reveals the vegan slice of the pizza market.

Far from a fleeting fad, veganism has taken the UK by storm in recent years – and according to Papa John’s it’s not slowing down any time soon. The popular pizza delivery chain has revealed orders of (completely) plant-based pizzas from their stores have risen by a staggering 81% (2019 vs 2020).

Papa John’s now has over 500 vegan-friendly stores across the country, with six delicious vegan pizza options, with this total continually rising due to demand. According to the pizza company, the city with the most vegan orders (as a proportion of their total orders) is Southend.

The vegan trend isn’t just specific to its pizza either, as data shows a 154% rise in customers ordering plant-based side dishes to accompany their slices. From crispy “Not-Chicken” Vegan Bites and Vegan Cheese Potato Tots to crunchy Cauliflower Wings and its ‘love it or hate it’ Vegan Cheese & Marmite® Scrolls, there is something for everyone to get their teeth into.

The pizza-delivery company also cited that overall, across all UK stores, The Vegan Works pizza was the favourite topping choice for those who follow a plant-based diet. The award-winning pizza is topped with a rich tomato sauce with vegan cheese, slices of smoky jackfruit “pepperoni”, vegan sausage, chestnut mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and black Herrera olives.

“It’s fantastic to see demand for vegan food continue to grow every year, largely driven by the incredible range of plant-based dishes available now to consumers,” said Giles Codd, Senior Marketing Director at Papa John’s UK.

With recipe innovation at our core, we’re proud to offer such a wide selection of award-winning vegan products in our stores, including pizzas, sides, dips and desserts. We’re also the only takeaway pizza chain to offer a Vegan Cheese Stuffed Crust, something’s that’s proving popular with our customers!

National Pizza Week is a week-long celebration (22nd-28th November 2021) of one of the nation’s favourite meals, celebrating pizza in all its cheesy, glory, supporting retailers and food outlets to make a strong comeback and providing a much-needed boost to the economy. As part of the celebrations, Papa John’s is offering 50% off its pizzas throughout the week when customers spend £25 or more.

Giles ended: “We’re also excited to offer our Papa John’s customers 50% off our vegan menu to enjoy throughout November for World Vegan Month.”
